Dell unveils the PCs featuring Ubuntu. The featured systems include: Dimension E520 N, XPS 410 N PCs and Inspiron E1505 N a notebook.
These systems with open source OS are in a result of customer feedback at IdeaStorm according to which customers are interested in open source Linux on new machines.
Ubuntu is a community developed Linux based operating system ans is known as one of the most popular open source OS.

Blu-ray or HD DVD – HP has a solution

Which drive should I have – Blu-ray or HD DVD? This is one of the frequently asked question. But don’t worry, cause HP has answer for this. Recently, Arstechnica posted an article. According to the post HP is planning to offer a hybrid HD DVD/Blu-ray optical drive for some of its build-to-order this week. The hybrid drive included in the machines will be the LG Super Multi Blue Blu-ray Disc Rewriter and HD DVD-ROM Drive (GGW-H10N).
The new options will be available this Wednesday for select PCs through its online store, such as the Pavilion Media Center m8019y and d4890y.
The base prices for the Pavilion Media Centers m8019y and d4890y will be $929.99 and $949.99, respectively.

Pictures of Google Hardware in 1998 and Googleplex

This is the picture of Google Servers and hardware when they first started up in 1998. You can also see a homemade diskbox made of Duplo blocks. This is awesome. How the today’s billion dollar company started from small!
Currently, Google maintains an estimated 450,000 servers, arranged in racks located in clusters in cities around the world. From: Wikipedia

The details of hardware in the picture:

1. Two 300 MHz Dual Pentium II Servers with 512MB of RAM. There are 9 9G drives between the two machines. The main search engine is running on these. These were donated by Intel.

2. IBM donated F50 IBM RS6000 with 4 processors and 512MB of memory. It has 8 9G drives internal.

3. The left box has 3 9G drives, and there are 6 4G drives on the right (the original storage for Backrub). These are attached to Sun Ultra II.

4. This IBM disk expansion box has another 8 9G drives. This was donated by IBM.

5. This is Sun Ultra II with dual 200MHz processors, and 256MB of RAM. This was the main machine for the original Backrub system.

6. This is homemade disk box which contains 10 9G SCSI drives.

Gateway announced five Network Attached Storage devices

Gateway announced five new Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices featuring Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 and a choice of IntelÂ® XeonÂ® processors or AMD Opteronâ„¢ processors. The new models are the E-9422R; E-9425R, E-9522R, E-9525R and the E-9520T Storage Servers. Preconfigured for simple plug and play installation, Gateway’s new rack mount storage servers provide seamless integration into existing storage configurations, allowing customers to get up and running quickly. NAS servers can act as file servers hosting files or as local print servers.

AMD 690 chipset incorporates ATI graphics

The Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) integerated ATI Radeon X1250 graphics processor with its 690 chipset. The integeration of Radeon X1250 graphics processor into 690 means now you do not need a separate graphics card and it will also allow the use of vista features such as Areo, Flip and Flip 3D.
It also featues integrated DVI and HDMI outputs for high-definition video. These features allow direct all-digital connections to modern large screen TVs and video projectors. The chipset also includes hardware decoding for MPEG2, the video compression technology used with DVDs. Together, that makes the 690 chipset powerful enough to support PCs running Microsoft Corp.’s new Windows Vista OS, as well as home computers designed as media center PCs
According to AMD, over 30 motherboard designs using the new chipset will be available from companies such as ASUS, EPoX, Foxconn, Gigabyte and MSI.
AMD acquired the graphics chipmaker ATI last year.

Samsung made higher speed GDDR4

The South Korean Company Samsung made the higher speed chip by using 80 nanometer production technology. The new GDDR4 memory chips is two-third faster than the currently available GDDR4 chips and works at 4G bps. This will enable ultra-smooth movements in animation and make games incredibly realistic, resulting in a truly immersive user experience.
The new 4G bps GDDR4 memory will be a 512M bit (64M byte) chip. The new GDDR4, is ready for customer sampling this month.

Dell – Pre-Installed Linux options

Dell is working with Novell to certify their corporate client products for Linux, including OptiPlex desktops, Latitude notebooks and Dell Precision workstations. The plan was made after the feedback by users at recently launched Dell IdeaStorm.
The most of the users at Dell IdeaStorm showed their interests in open source solutions like Linux and OpenOffice. As distribution of Linux comes in different flavors, so community suggested more than half a dozen distributions and not any perticular Linux distribution was finalized by the community.
Dell says: “We don’t want to pick one distribution and alienate users with a preference for another. We want users to have the opportunity to help define the market for Linux on desktop and notebook systems. In addition to working with Novell, we are also working with other distributors and evaluating the possibility of additional certifications across our product line. We are continuing to investigate your other Linux-related ideas”
