This is the picture of PillCam – a tiny camera incorporated within a small capsule. This gadget helps the physicians to look at the small intestine.
Dr. James Mann, a gastroenterologist with Pee Dee Gastroenterology Associates, said PillCam already proved its worth as a useful tool for determining the existence of conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, particularly Crohn’s disease, which affects about 500,000 people in the United States.
“This allows us to detect Crohn’s disease in the small intestine and then evaluate the extent of the disease,” Mann said.
“It’s impossible to evaluate the entire small intestine with an endoscope,” Mann said. “This allows us to look at the largest part of the GI tract, which has been off limits to us in the not-too-distant past.” Carolinas Hospital System in Florence is utilizing the services of this tiny gadget.
