Sony announced that it is introducing a low cost player for Blu-ray discs. The new player will be available in the market by early this summer. The BDP-S300 will cost $599 and will have almost the same capabilities as the currently available BDP-S1 ($999). This is a very important decision which could lead towards replacing the DVDs by high definition Blu-ray discs.
As compared to BDP-S1, the BDP-S300 is a smaller unit about the same size as a DVD player. The new player would also be able to play CD and output a signal in the highest high-definition format, known as 1080p.
Most people buy high-definition discs to play them on PlayStation 3 game consoles. 80% of people who buy a PS3 also buy Blu-ray movies to go with it.
